Ce qu'ils pensent des Beatles
Le "Liverpool Echo" a demandé a quelques artistes, quel était leur chanson préférée des Fab 4 et pourquoi...
Pink
THE bad girl of pop has always cited The Beatles as a key influence. Growing up in Philadelphia , Pink spent her early years listening to the Liverpool band.
“My favourite Beatles song is Hey Jude because I used to drive in the car with my dad and scream it from the top of my lungs – and because my mother’s name was Judy, which made me scream even louder.”
Meat Loaf
The mighty Meat describes himself as the world’s biggest Beatle fan.
“I just can’t get enough of them. They were music to me. When I was growing up, I wanted to be them.
“I just love Blackbird. I know it’s not one of the big tracks but I love the melody. It’s just beautiful.”
Ricky Tomlinson
Ricky keeps it simple – and local: “My favourite Beatles song of all time has to be the classic Penny Lane.”
Oasis
Noel says his favourite song of all time is Ticket To Ride – so much so that he’s based all his best songs on it.
“I’d rewrite Ticket To Ride all day long if I could,” he laughs.
Deacon Blue
Singer Ricky Ross knows straight away what his favourite track is: “Very easy, the last section of Abbey Road, You Never Give Me Your Money, She Came In Through The Bathroom Window, Polythene Pam and Golden Slumbers. It’s just a fantastic sequence of music. I think that second side is my favourite piece of Beatles music.”
Whitesnake
David Coverdale chooses not a track, but a whole album. “I’m a complete Beatles fan – all the songs – I loved Revolver and still do,” he explains.
“If it wasn’t for them I’m not sure I’d be enjoying a career in music. They grabbed the music business by the b***s and took over.
“They opened up all the doors for people like me. Up until then, nobody was allowed to sing their own songs.
“Bless their beautiful hearts – and they sang about love – what great karma to give to the world.”
OMD
Andy McCluskey has an unusual choice. “My favourite Beatles song is Thank You Girl. I think it was a B side,” he explains. “It was my favourite song when I was growing up.
“Blackbird is actually my favourite Beatles song,” adds Paul Humphreys. “I think it’s such a brilliant melody.”
Andy: “Bit of a cliché but it has to be I Am The Walrus great track.”
Paul: “And another one for me is Fool On The Hill.”
Russell Brand
The gothic philanderer with a penchant for a Dickensian turn of phrase can’t get enough of the Fab Four.
“I’ve got a lot of favourite Beatles songs,” he explains. “I really love Lovely Rita. I really love Strawberry Fields and I love I Am The Walrus. But recently when they did the covers of Sgt Pepper, me and the brilliant composer David Arnold did a cover of When I’m 64 and he said to me ‘sing it all sad’. The original Beatles version is done so the answer to all the questions is ‘yes’: ‘Will you still need me, will you still feed me? and the answer’s done with an optimistic jocular ‘yes I will still do that do that’.
“So David Arnold says ‘do it as if the answer is ‘no’ ’ so we did it as a really sad version which means that my friends the musicians have ridiculed me ever since that day. The lads from Oasis have been very cruel and my radio co- host, Matt Morgan from Radio 2, has ridiculed me. So When I’m 64 is now both my favourite and the Beatles song that has caused me the most pain and hardship.
“But by jingo what a sensitive ballad it is and that is how it was intended to be sung. That bloke who sang the original made a lot of very churlish errors.”
McFly
Tom from McFly is particularly vocal about his top track: “My favourite Beatles song? That’s a tough question as I like quite a lot of early Beatles songs, like She Loves You – that’s got to be one of my favourites. I like poppy, 60s melodies which is why I like their early stuff. I think the best thing about The Beatles is that, no matter what mood you are in for music, there is a Beatles song which suits your mood. I love Eleanor Rigby. It’s amazing.
“Penny Lane is an amazing song and an amazing melody. The Beatles are the ultimate band of all time; there will never be a band as big as The Beatles again.”
Sugababes
The girls just can’t get enough of Merseybeat, it seems. “Collectively some of our favourite songs are Eleanor Rigby and Yesterday,” says Aintree babe Heidi Range.
“And Hey Jude and Sgt Pepper,” adds Amelle
“And She Loves You,” adds Keisha.
Ian McNabb
Ian struggles to choose just one track: “Number one is Strawberry Fields Forever, number two Things We Said Today, number three You’ve got To Hide Your Love Away – I played that when I supported Brian Wilson – number four is Hey Bulldog, number five is The Things We Said Today,” he says
“I’m sure if you asked me again in five minutes I’d give you another five ...”
10CC
Graham Gouldman says he owes it all to the four lads from Liverpool.
“I guess all The Beatles songs are my favourites,” he chuckles. “If I had to choose it would be Hey Jude. It just starts off in such a brilliant way and carries on and finishes in one of the best endings of a song of all time.
“I saw Her Standing There has the best count-off of any record that I know; a very exciting song, great vocals, great energy. A Day In The Life is just the most inventive of any other Beatle song. Yesterday, a McCartney song, is beautiful and simple. Everything’s right – in the songwriting and the actual recording.
“Anything The Beatles did is great by me. They are the biggest influence on my music.”
