Paul: "Pas de tournée pour 2006"
"I'll do the Grammys … have a bit of fun there," he says. "Win or lose, it doesn't matter. Then I'm going to work on some projects. But no tour."
Paul McCartney's quick replies when asked about some of the people and times in his life.
*
The historic Ed Sullivan
TV shows in 1964:
Just waiting backstage and being told 73 million people were watching.
Writing "Yesterday":
The first thing is changing the lyrics from "scrambled eggs and baby, I love your legs" to the ones in the song and also writing the final lyrics on a dusty car journey from Lisbon to the south of Portugal.
Ringo Starr:
Best drummer in the world. Great, dry sense of humor. He has this instinctive thing that he does. He's sort of naturally brilliant.
Being in Wings:
Wings has sort of been rediscovered in recent years, and that's nice. One of the unfortunate things is we never knew at the time whether we were successful because we were living in the shadow of the Beatles.
Favorite Beatles song
that you wrote:
I never really know which one to say because my feelings change, but I usually answer "Here, There and Everywhere."
George Harrison:
Wonderful, forthright, direct guy. Very serious-minded, but devastating sense of humor. I remember sharing bus rides with him when we were teens.
Favorite Beatles song
that you didn't write:
Again, that's difficult, but maybe "A Day in the Life."
The constant use of
"love" in your songs:
I know some guy who decided he would never write a song with the word "love" in it, maybe just because everyone else had done it. And I remember thinking that was placing quite a limit on yourself because love is such a driving force in our lives, certainly mine. The danger is that it can come off sappy.
What about the complaints that "Silly Love Songs" was too sappy?
I knew I was stepping too far in that direction on the song, but I did it on purpose. That's why I put "silly" in the title.
I met Springsteen a few years ago at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame dinner and he said, "You know, I never really got 'Silly Love Songs' when it came out." Like a lot of people, he thought it was mawkish. But he wanted to tell me he changed his mind after he got a couple of kids. And that was really gratifying because I knew I was being so vulnerable by standing up and going, "Isn't love great!"
John Lennon:
I'll always be amazed by how fate threw the two of us together through a friend of mine, Ivan, who was born the same day as me: John meeting me, liking what I did and inviting me into his band. From then on, it was us writing and being partners in the band, growing up together. He's a very special guy, very complex, and I think we did some great stuff. I just always will be a big fan of John.
OK, here's a change of pace. What is the second greatest rock band ever?
[Pause] The Beatles.
You mean you think Wings was better than the Beatles?
No [with a smile], for me, the Beatles are first, second and third.
