Another witness...
"Hi everyone,
I was thrilled again to see Paul perform last night at Lincoln Center's
Avery Fisher Hall for the wonderful charity The Association of Hole in
the Wall Camps.
He only sang "Yesterday" and "Lady Madonna" and he really didn't seem
himself. He looked great (as usual) in a pinstripe charcoal suit and
hair on the short side.
Tony Bennet performed four songs, so I expected Paul to at least do the
same, but surprisingly, he took his bow and left after the second.. He
struggled singing Yesterday and really messed up the words to Lady
Madonna. I wonder if he was not feeling well.or something. Poor Paul.
had an off night. I guess it happens to all of us, right? I already
know he's the best, that will never change for me.
At the end of the evening he came out again with all the performers and
they all took another bow. My Paul radar was up and I've seen him
enough times to sense that
he felt uncomfortable. (I feel that deep down he is really insecure on
stage and that's one of the reasons his shows are so scripted). Just the
way I see it.
It was a very moving emotional evening and I wonder if he did go to the
dinner and auction afterwards. I wish we would have gone but it would
have cost $10,000 for my husband and I. The tent set up looked
beautiful. The whole evening was pure class, and it made me even more
grateful to have four healthy kids.
I will NEVER in this lifetime be unhappy seeing Paul perform no matter
what. I just hope he's O K. "

Pas très en forme ou plutot très discret comme à chaque concert de charité.

I attended the Paul Newman benefit Thursday night in NY at Avery Fisher Hall.
I was a little disappointed at the whole concert - for one thing it was very short. The program said it would start promptly at 7PM but the lights didn't go down until about 7:15-7:20 and I was sitting in a cab on the way home by 8:45PM!
There was a short film first to tell about the Hole in the Wall camp organizations then some kids who were on the program came out and did a skit introducing Julia Roberts. Then Paul Newman came out and they did a little routine together. They used the kids from the camp to introduce the performers.
The stage was set up with a piano, set of drums, big standing bass and guitar. Tony Bennett came on first and did 4 songs - the sound wasn't that great and Tony's voice sounded a little rough. He got a standing ovation.
Then the Emerson String Quartet came out and did a movement from a classical piece which lasted maybe 15 minutes. After that there was this acrobatic group Anti Gravity (sort of reminded me of Paul's preshow) that performed. After this group, Robin Williams came out and did this absolutely brilliant, funny routine. Then one of the kids came out and did a little routine trying to introduce Paul and being dumbstruck. He talked about a dream which lead Paul into his "I dreamed Yesterday story". He then performed Yesterday backed by the Emerson String quartet. Paul did not have the band with him which I realized when he sat down at the piano and did Lady Madonna again accompanied by the string quartet. He got heckled by a woman in the audience after he did Yesterday - she shouted out "I love you" and Paul couldn't hear her so he asked her to repeat what she said. She shut up after that and Paul continued with Lady Madonna. Again I don't think that Paul was miked properly but he didn't sound that great. I was in shock. He was having a hard time reaching the high notes in Yesterday and his voice sounded very thin. I don't know if he was having an off night or not but I've never heard him sound that bad. He looked great, though. Wore a dark blue suit with a dark blue and white patterned button down shirt. I had pretty good seats - first tier and dead center so I had a good view and there was a small screen behind the performers. That was it - just 2 songs and then Heather Headley (a talented Broadway star who was in the Lion King and Aida) came out with a back up chorus and did one song. Then the show was over and the entire set of performers and kids came out and took their bows. Paul was at one end in between Tony Bennett and Robin Williams and he and Robin started doinng a little dance routine.
So that was the entire concert.
